Power and Performance

The base Chevrolet Colorado comes with a 2.5-liter engine that pumps out 200 horsepower. There were also two other engines available: a 181-horsepower turbocharged 2.8-liter diesel configuration and a 308-horsepower 3.6-liter V6.

Rear-wheel drive is standard, as is a 6-speed manual transmission. This truck has very nice handling and an excellent suspension system.

When it comes to a workhorse vehicle, nothing can compete with a truck. But, this doesn’t mean you have to buy a new one to get what you need. A used pickup truck – like the models below – can have outstanding ability on any worksite.

Chevy Silverado 1500

For its class, the Chevy Silverado 1500 has some the best towing ability. The base model comes with a 4.3-liter V6 engine that produces 285 horsepower and 305 lb-ft of torque. This will let you tow between 7,400 and 8,000 pounds.

If you go with the 3.0-liter turbodiesel configuration that generates 277 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque, you’ll be able to tow up to 9,300 pounds.

The 5.3-liter V8 engine – which produces 355 horsepower and 383 lb-ft of torque – has a tow rating of 9,500 and 11,600 pounds. But for the best towing ability, you’ll want the 6.2-liter V8. This puts out 420 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque and can tow up to 13,400 pounds.

The Chevy Silverado 1500 also has a maximum payload of 2,250 pounds.

Chevy Silverado 2500HD

For even better towing and ability capability, consider the 2020 Chevy Silverado 2500HD. This truck comes with a standard 6.6-liter V8 engine that offers 401 horsepower and 464 lb-ft of torque.

It will let you tow up to 14,500 pounds and haul up to 9,500 pounds. You can also opt for the Duramax® diesel engine 6.6-liter V8 engine that pumps out 445 horsepower and 910 lb-ft of torque. This truck will let you tow up to 15,400 pounds and haul up to 10,000 pounds.

The Chevy Colorado may be a smaller truck, but it has very nice towing capability. The base 200-horsepower, 2.5-liter engine can tow up to 3,500 pounds. However, for greater towing ability, you’ll want the 308-horsepower, 3.6-liter V6, which doubles that to 7,000 pounds.

Chevy Silverado 1500

The towing capacity of the Chevy Silverado 1500 depends on the cab style and trim you go with. The base model with a 285-horsepower, 4.3-liter V6 engine can tow between 7,200 and 7,900 pounds. The 2.7-liter turbocharged version puts out 310 horsepower and can tow between 9,000 and 9,600 pounds.

With the 355-horsepower, 5.3-liter V8 engine, that number is between 9,300 and 11,500 pounds. The 420-horsepower, 6.2-liter V8 will let you tow between 9,100 and 13,300 pounds.

Chevy Silverado 2500HD

The Chevy Silverado 2500HD comes with a 6.6-liter V8 engine that produces 401 horsepower. You can also go with a 445-horsepower, 6.6-liter V8 diesel configuration. When a model with this engine is properly equipped, you’ll be able to tow up to 14,500 pounds.

2021 Chevy Silverado 3500HD

The base 2021 Chevy Silverado 3500HD comes with a 380-horsepower, 6.0-liter V8 engine, and it has an outstanding tow rating of 17,370 pounds. However, if you go with the 445-horsepower, 6.6-liter turbodiesel V8, that number goes all the way up to 36,000, which nothing else in our lineup can match.
